Pekanbaru, Siak - The Siak Regency Government affirmed its support for efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through cross-regional and international collaboration at the Green for Riau Initiative Multistakeholder Workshop and Dialogue: Mitigation Action Plan, Safeguards, and Key Actors, held at the Pangeran Hotel, Pekanbaru, Thursday (January 29, 2026).

Siak Regent Afni stated that the activity was part of the Indonesian government's joint commitment to meeting the 2030 FOLU Net Sink target for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. He emphasized that the regency and city governments, in principle, follow the policy direction set by the provincial government.

"This activity relates to the government's cooperation and commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We follow provincial policy. So, in principle, we support it," Afni said when met after the event.

He explained that Siak Regency has conservation areas that are crucial in supporting the climate change mitigation agenda. Therefore, the Siak Regency Government fully supports the Green for Riau Initiative and hopes that the benefits of this effort will also be felt throughout the region.

"If Riau Province can eventually reap the same benefits as East Kalimantan, then hopefully these benefits will also be felt by regencies and cities that have conservation areas and are working towards them," he added.

Meanwhile, Acting Governor of Riau, SF Hariyanto, stated that the Green for Riau Initiative is positioned as an implementation platform to strengthen climate change mitigation actions in Riau Province, particularly in the land-based sector.

"We designed Green for Riau to align policies, technical processes, and multi-stakeholder collaboration so that strengthening mitigation actions in the land-based sector can be more concrete and measurable," said SF Hariyanto.

Support for this initiative has also come from international partners. Saul Hathaway, a representative of the British Government Department at the British Embassy in Jakarta, expressed his appreciation for the steps taken by the Riau Provincial Government through the Green for Riau Initiative.

"Today is more than just a workshop. It truly represents a significant milestone in our shared journey towards sustainable landscape and environmental action. Green for Riau is shaping the way we manage forests and peatlands in Riau, recognizing these ecosystems as the backbone of a resilient and green local economy," said the Head of Nature Finance.

He added that by strengthening governance and participating in a high-integrity carbon market, Green for Riau is opening up opportunities for long-term sustainable investment that supports regional development priorities and Indonesia's national climate targets.

Through this multi-stakeholder dialogue, the Siak Regency Government hopes that synergy between the Regional Government, Provincial Government, and international partners can encourage the concrete implementation of mitigation action plans and have a positive impact on the environment and communities in Siak Regency.
