Siak, Siberriau - The Dutch Barracks cultural heritage building in Mempura District, Siak Regency, collapsed on Saturday (January 31, 2026) at around 9:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time. The incident injured 16 students who were participating in a study tour.

The victims were a group of students from Baitul Ridho Islamic Elementary School in Lubuk Dalam who were on the second floor of the Dutch Barracks building at the time of the incident. The second floor collapse occurred suddenly during an explanation session, causing the participants to fall and be hit by falling building materials.

According to data from the Siak Regency Health Office, of the 16 affected victims, 10 were referred to Tengku Rafi'an Siak Regional Hospital for medical treatment, while 6 others underwent observation and were discharged.

Of these, 15 were children and 1 was an adult, a teacher.

The Head of the Siak Regency Tourism Office, Syafrizal, confirmed the incident. He told the media that all the victims were MTs students visiting a tourist attraction.

"Yes, there are nine students who were victims and are currently being treated at Tengku Rafi'an Siak Regional Hospital. Of that number, three have suffered quite serious injuries," Syafrizal told the media via mobile phone on Saturday (January 31, 2026), as quoted from siakkab.go.id.

Syafrizal explained that the collapse of the second floor of the Dutch Barracks Building was strongly suspected to be caused by the building's age.

Although it appeared sturdy from the outside, the wooden structure inside was apparently fragile.

"The building is made of wood. The wood has been eaten by termites. From the outside, it looks strong, but inside, it's already brittle. This is evident from the broken wood fragments that occurred during the incident," he explained.

The Dutch Barracks Building itself is a historic building from the colonial era that has long been a tourist attraction in Siak Regency.

"We hope that the relevant ministries and agencies will immediately evaluate and improve existing tourist destinations to prevent a similar incident from happening again. Visitor safety must be the top priority," he said.

Regarding the victims' medical expenses, Syafrizal confirmed that the Siak Regency Government will cover all costs.

This is a form of the local government's responsibility for the disaster that befell the students.

"The Siak Regency Government will cover all medical expenses for the victims," ??he emphasized. (Dep/C Siak Regency).
